Storytelling & Reading Aloud - Introduction
Reading aloud in class can be a truly engaging way to introduce our students into reading, if we do it well. Storytelling and read-alouds (or their alternative, think-alouds) do that. They make reading a moment to talk, to savor, to think. What you do not want to do (and if you're doing that and reading this page, stop as of right now) is to the traditional turn-taking reading aloud activity we've all done at some point, you know what we call "round-robin reading" or "popcorn reading". Here are some links from school teachers as well as renowned literacy researchers such as Tim Shanahan. Melanie Kuhn, and Lindsey Moses making a strong argument again round-robin reading.
